Fixed Opposed Dual Piston Caliper and Floating Rotor
Project Objectives: I am currently working on the design and development of an improved rear brake caliper and floating rotor for the CWRU Motorsports Baja team. The goal of this project is to significantly improve the braking system’s efficiency and reliability.
Caliper Design: Transitioning from a single-piston floating caliper to a dual-piston opposed fixed caliper to achieve better braking efficiency due to reduced deflection. This design change is aimed at enhancing the overall braking performance, in our racing applications where precision and reliability are crucial.
Rotor Design: I am redesigning the rotor to be a floating rotor, which is lighter and offers significant thermal advantages, addressing past issues with rotor warping. This new design aims to improve the durability and performance of the braking system.
Validation and Testing: The next steps involve validating the design using finite element analysis (FEA) in Ansys. Special attention will be given to ensuring the gearbox housing does not crack under the new mounting conditions, a critical factor in the success of the project.
